☆Hime Gyaru☆

Hime Gyaru, what is it? Firstly its 姫(ひめ) which is Japanese (obviously) for princess. It is another sub-style that falls under the big gyaru umbrella. Why? Well if you want to shop for hime gyaru clothes then you will end up in the same place all other gyaru shop in. Namely Shibuya 109. There are some specialty shops that cater specifically to that hime gyaru look and those shops look amazing. Just pink pastel everywhere, ribbons, lace and you name it. You can also find some shops in takeshita dori in Harajuku, but your best bet is to try Shibuya first. Of coure if you wanted to get a Harajuku true style crepe, than maybe thats your first stop! They just dont sell any good crepes in Shibuya?
Hime gyaru is not this kind of princess. Definitely not the kind of princess we in the western world have ideas about…

Not Disney!
However, hime gyaru takes the basic idea… to look gorgeous. To understand Hime gyaru first we need to look at the big niche magazine that serves this particular portion of the Japanese gyaru culture. Namely Ageha!
hime gyaru ageha cover
First thing you should note is the sparkly nature of the magazine cover. Everything sparkles, it fact it makes it hard to read what is actually on the cover.

The sparkling gorgeous look is ubiquitous, and carries across even on this cover of the same Ageha magazine. This explains somewhat a gyaru hime’s penchant for rhinestone ladden mobile phones and event mint boxes!

Here is another cover, and I really dig the black and white coordination here. As you have noticed hime gyaru have lots of make up = perfect complexion, and big smokey eyes. Sure, having some really soft lighting helps here to bring that amazing perfect sin color too!
Here are some pages from Ageha, hopefully you can get a good appreciation for the hair styles and fashion sense that drive this niche.

Hime Gyaru Pictures

First up some examples of hair styles.

hime gyaru hairstyle
Hime Gyaru Hairstyle
As you can see, a big love for long hair. It has to be long, otherwise you cant do the second most common thing gyaru hime do, curl it! The hallmark then is to add something cute and stick it in those curls, like that white rose? type accessory.

Makeup examples now…

As you can see, the same really as most gyaru makeup. The big 3 that is. big lashes + big contacts + big (dark) eye shadow = hime gyaru eyes. The perfect complexion comes from the way they shoot their models. Which is not to dissimilar to the effect you get at puri-kura picture booths! The light is refracted and works to even out skin tones, then the eye makeup pops out the eyes. Notice that he lips are normal natural lip color, no red or anything that stands out. If you do that, youve got the Lady GaGa look :) ok.

The large majority of the readers of Ageha work in kyabakura. Ie as hostesses. That is, they work in little clubs where men, usually business men sit and pay money to have a chat with these ladies. If they so like, they will invite the hostesses to diner, dates and clubs. Sex isnt really on the menu for this kind of service, but I imagine if you have the money for it you can buy it.
Now, If you did a image search for gyaru hime in google you tend to get this…
hime gyaru on web

Im going to put my professional image on the line here for  second. I think that kind of fashion we westerners automatically assume is only hime gyaru,  and by all means it looks like princess gyaru… I think that it tends to also border into the lolita side of things as well. If you have ever seen that movie. Shimotsuma monogatari or Kamakaze Girl in the states, you will notice that its about Lolita fashion, the same kind of look that we also call hime gyaru. However princess gyaru fashion actually encompasses a whole other side that we don’t see. A slightly more adult side. Which is no doubt due to the overwhelming reason that the majority of Ageha readers work in the adult industry.
Anyway, I would love to hear you guys opinion on what exactly is this all about?
Thanks for reading!

☆Gyaru Makeup – Basic Eye Makeup Tutorial☆

Thought I would take a break from all this Gyaru hair stuff and post up some beginner type gyaru makeup tutorials for those who want some instruction on gyaru makeup.

Specifically to do with the eyes, since afterall that is the centre piece of the face for a gyaru and on asian girls big eyes really draw big attention and for gyaru makeup getting the eyes is really important.
Before you begin you will need some gyaru makeup basic items, below you will see a recommended item to get you started. Where possible I highlight Japanese products although you can always find a similar western equivalent too.

1) Eye shadow

If you are new start with any basic browns pack. 3 to 4 shades is enough. From a dark brown to a lighter skin white is more than adequate.

2) Eye liner / Eye Pencil

I would recommend gel eyeliners for the newbies, it is fairly forgiving to those with shaky hands trying it for the first time. Unfortunately Amazon do not seem like they stock Japanese gel eyeliners at the moment, however this Korean one gets a thumbs up from friends.

If you have more experience and very steady hands then an ink eyeliner from Koji”s Dolly line of gyaru makeup is the best.
If you like to draw in your eye liner than a pencil will also work, Koji has this one available.

3) Eyelash curler

You want to pump up those sad droopy lashes and really pump them so they stand up at a good angle from your face otherwise the eyelashes will not pop up enough. Any will do, but you want to get a curved one as its easier to use I find. Here is a Koji one. Also remember that you may have to change the little plastic bit on one side of the curler when it starts to get used up a bit.

4) Mascara

You want long lasting mascara that will add a lot of volume for night time, and you want finer lashes during the day. Have a look at something like this. Koji have a wider variety to suit any occasion.

5) Stick on Eyelashes

Beware of cheapies, they fall off. Nothing worse than one eyelash hanging down half stuck across your eye lids without you realising! If you are out and clubbing, you will not realize after one-or two- or three+ drinks ;p Stick on eyelashes (tsukema) come in a lot of shapes and sizes, lengths, glinter or no glinter. You can also find ones that you cut and stick along the bottom of your lashes. The fun is in experimenting and seeing what you find comfortable with. For the moment you can safely adventure out with these, you can see they are the exact same as recommended by Ranzuki in the magazine scan.

Gyaru Makeup Tutorial Style Points

  • Apply eye liner and eyeshadow on the bottom eyes, a common beginner mistake is too try and use to much and end up looking like a kabuki stage actor. If you dont know what that is… its a bad thing. So remember for gyaru startes it is best to use very sparingly for this beginner gyaru look.
  • As you decide which gyaru inspired color you would would like on the eyelids, remember that you can use to start of with at least 2 tones on the eye lids to solidify that gyaru look.
Gyaru Makeup Style Points
  • Start by using the end tip of the mascara to paint little blobs under your lashes first, then after carefully apply it over the whole length in a zig-zag motion
  • Let it dry before you start blinking and smudging it everywhere (careful)
  • Today’s style guide produces very tone down and much more adult gyaru makeup look!

Shading

Translations:

1. Follow your face line from the bottom of your ear to your chin and put in a natural shading. This is the most important part of making a small face.
2. In the C area, shade in a way that caresses around the eye.
3. 3 stars! When you are sporting a hairstyle that reveals your forehead, put a natural shade from where your hair starts to make your face look smaller.
4. Er… something about water base makeup.. or not lol I’m not sure. It says to put highlight in that area though.
5. Highlight the t-zone area to create a certain effect for your face. I don’t know what it says but I’m sure its something good lol
